Bouquet to the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. I was there for assessment on a busy, stormy night and they were all terrific – pleasant and professional. We must pressure our politicians to fix our health care now.

Editor’s note: In keeping with tradition, the first Beefs & Bouquets page of the new year is bouquets only. Beefs of the Year were posted this past weekend and can be found at this link.

BOUQUET To the banker who helped me navigate my previous Vancouver landlords taking money out that was not theirs, after renovicting me. Your help really brightened the end of a dark time.

BOUQUET A special thank you to all the staff at Harris Kia. Thank you for making our latest purchase seamless. Everyone we encountered during the process was very efficient. We really appreciated the constant professionalism as well.

BOUQUET To Doug and his team at London Drugs North Town Centre for organizing the Stockings Stuffers for Seniors program. Also a huge thank you to the community for donating to this wonderful program. Our seniors were so grateful for the generous gifts and the kindness shown to them.

BOUQUET To Black Rabbit Kitchen restaurant which worked so hard to create a table for four on a busy night when I had mistakenly reserved for only two parties. It was a special get together with friends and they made it happen. Wonderful food and service as always.

BOUQUET To all the people involved with the Festival of Trees in years past. We won the tree ‘Countdown to Christmas’ in 2012 and still enjoy it every year. Thank you to the volunteers for so creatively decorating our tree.

BOUQUET To the fellow who came with his ATV to the Bayshore loop and removed the huge amount of snow so six families were able to get out. We are very grateful to him. The city has rarely ever helped us.

BOUQUET To the remarkable couple who helped push my car out of the middle of the intersection on Terminal Avenue when my car died. It was pouring rain and no one was stopping. Thanks for your amazing kindness.

BOUQUET To Austin, our beloved Rottweiler of 11 years. We’re going to miss you. You were the best dog ever, except for your gas, that was the worst.

BOUQUET NanGo Grannies would like to thank Island Soul Choir for inviting us to hold a successful craft market during their performance at the Port Theatre. The fundraising was in support of African grandmothers through the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Intermission sweets were provided in co-operation with Nanaimo Bakery, a social purpose business supporting the work of the Island Crisis Care Society.

BOUQUET I would like to thank everyone who came to my aid when my friend fell down in front of the doctors’ office at Port Place Shopping Centre.

BOUQUET I would like to say thank you to James and Eli from Best Buy for setting up my new TV.

BOUQUET To Yvonne from UPS who went out of her way to deliver a package to me after hours and in the snow. Thank you for caring for your customers and ensuring that gifts are delivered.

BOUQUET To my saviours at Apple Auto Glass. My windshield wiper bracket had broke and I’d gone to a number of shops to find them all closed. I was thinking my holiday plans would have to be cancelled. I dropped in at Apple without an appointment and they fixed the problem in record time. Wishing you a prosperous New Year. Thank you.

BOUQUET To the two security girls at Shoppers Drug Mart for their kindness and compassion when I lost my keys at Country Club Centre. I was very stressed and they calmed me down and found my keys. I appreciate them so much. You are my heroes.

BOUQUET To the young couple that paid for my groceries at Costco. I was overwhelmed by your kindness and will pay it forward. You made my day.

BOUQUET To the snowplow driver in the south Nanaimo-Harewood area. Best plowing job ever done in the last 32 years I have lived in Nanaimo. Well done.

BOUQUET To Doug, staff and customers at London Drugs, Nanaimo North Town Centre, for their generous contribution to our seniors at Arrowsmith Lodge and Cokely Manor. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you and happy holidays.

BOUQUET A quick kudos and appreciation to the Nanaimo News Bulletin and our carrier Jordan. Very good newspaper deliveries always. My paper is in its place, it’s neat and tidy and we really appreciate the attention to detail.

BOUQUET To Ann W. and Jane at Channel View Condos who rescued me when I became trapped in the elevator. You brought me blankets, then insisted I come into your home to warm up in front of the fire with a cup of tea. Your kindness is much appreciated.

BOUQUET Want to let you know that Jordan our paper carrier is absolutely fantastic. Rest assured that you are being well represented by having such a courteous young person delivering your paper.

BOUQUET To Knox Contracting which did an immaculate job of our full house reno. Dependable, honest and with all of the necessary trades on hand they helped make our dreams come true. Thank you to the whole team.

BOUQUET A shout out to Canadian Tire management for the wonderful way they take care of their staff.

BOUQUET To Joseph M. of Diamond Wood Designs. My hero. If ever you want kitchen/bathroom renos done, big or small, he’s your man. Perfectionist, punctual, kind, listens and responsible. A rare find these days. Thank you.

BOUQUET To Julie, a librarian at the north-end branch, for her extra effort to find old-time radio audio tapes for an elderly, vision-impaired lady. Many thanks.

BOUQUET To Holly of Serious Coffee at Hammond Bay Centre for her always warm welcome.

BOUQUET The letter by Ted F. is the best piece of writing regarding the anchoring issue I have ever read, please reprint it regularly.

BOUQUET To Kirkwood Dance Academy for an amazing performance of the Nutcracker. Every act was superb. Kudos to all performers. Costumes, props, backdrops – all the hard work showed.

BOUQUET To the beefer about sports associations. It is more than 30 years since I coached and managed teams and it looks like things haven’t changed.

BOUQUET To the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. I was there for assessment on a busy, stormy night and they were all terrific – pleasant and professional. We must pressure our politicians to fix our health care now.

BOUQUET To everyone who supports the Coins for Kids charity. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

BOUQUET To our wonderful neighbour George on MacIsaac Drive who went out of his way to clear many driveways after the snowfall last month. Great guy. Thanks.

BOUQUET To the staff at Home Hardware who are always friendly and available to help. Thanks.

BOUQUET To Gallazin Locksmiths, Brian and especially Ryan for returning my wallet. They are Christmas angels.

BOUQUET Thanks to the kind lady who gave me her lovely poinsettia. This random act of kindness occurred in the lounge at the Bowen Park Activity Centre. The poinsettia now sits in our house and is enjoyed very much and reminds us of the real meaning of Christmas.

BOUQUET To the gentleman who paid for the cane I was buying at Value Village when I realized I had left my wallet at home. Thanks again and I will pay it forward.

BOUQUET To Save-On-Foods at Woodgrove Centre for the massive donation of everything for a roast beef meal on Remembrance Day at Lantzville Legion Branch 257, and another bouquet to Thrifty’s for donating all the hot soup and buns for the children after the parade.

BOUQUET To the Christmas angel with the snow blower on Groveland Drive. Thanks for clearing many driveways and sidewalks.

BOUQUET To all the beefers. Every week you make me laugh. Happy new year, weirdos.

BOUQUET Shout out to C. and W. who shovelled the walks and parking on side streets around Mill Street after the big snow dump. Beef to the able-bodied condo owners who quickly grabbed those same parking spaces from seniors so those same able-bodied folks didn’t have to lug several grocery bags a block.

BOUQUET To the best comedy show on TV, Mountain Monsters with its hillbilly Sasquatch hunters.

BOUQUET To the young woman and her boyfriend who had pizza delivered to the waiting room at Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Your kindness, generosity and goodwill were a bright spot in an otherwise miserable evening. Foot passengers sat in an unheated waiting room for four hours with an out-of-order coffee machine.

BOUQUET To those who pay attention to detail. Rather than lazily skimming and seizing on a beef to serve as their personal soapbox, they see it’s actually a helpful heads up. Not a thumbs down. The smart readers will notice.

BOUQUET To the staff working in Ladysmith urgent care. You were all running around, working so hard with so many people needing you. The nurse handled a belligerent patient with kindness and grace, the X-ray tech’s kind manner was so lovely, and the doctor was so lovely and efficient while dealing with so many patients. For everything you all do, thank you.

BOUQUET To all the nurses, lab techs and the doctors in NRGH ER for taking care of me in such an expert way. Thank you so much everyone for your kindness and caring, helping me in my hour of need.

BOUQUET To the News Bulletin for making it easy to read its full publication, also to advertisers like Country Grocer for making their ads a size that seniors – who do not have six-foot arms to be able to read a broadsheet – can read the full ads.

BOUQUET To all the good motorists who stop for the yellow flashing light at the Nanaimo North Town Centre crosswalk. Because it’s more than a little dangerous being a pedestrian these days.
