Beef to the chain restaurant that charges for a slice of lemon with a glass of water. A slap in the face to patrons who spend money on their over-priced meals.

BOUQUET To the two young ladies who weeded and cleaned the boulevard at Townsite and Bowen roads. You did a great job and all this on Canada Day. We who look out our windows really appreciate it and thank you.

BEEF To the Evel Knievel wannabe pulling onto Hammond Bay Road from Norasea Road. You proceeded to ‘pop a wheelie,’ tailgate me and then ‘thread the needle.’ I just hope you pull out in front of me next time so I can have it on dashcam and share it with the RCMP.

BOUQUET to all the students and staff at the NDSS fine arts gala. What incredible talent, from music to dance, to theatre and arts. I was thoroughly impressed. Wow! Special kudos to our granddaughter whose band played so well and asked us to come along. Love you, chicken.

BEEF To ignorant and speeding drivers in our city. Slow down – you might have a happier life and live longer. It’s time to bring back photo radar and make the fines 10-fold to get through to these people.

BOUQUET To whoever constructed and maintains the fairy house doors in Neck Point Park. Our four-year-old was enchanted and her 12-year-old cousin was just as delighted by the doors even though no fairies answered our knocking. A wonderful thing for all ages, thank you.

BEEF To the silver-haired man in a black Nissan SUV dumping his cigarette butts out his window at Departure Bay. He then got out of his vehicle and went across the street to the store. Why didn’t you dump your butts in the garbage bins provided?

BOUQUET To Damien at Trojan Collision for his professional and caring customer service, and to Stefanie for making me a cappuccino while he put the bumper on my car back together again.

BEEF To politicians. Farming was a big issue in the papers, then nothing said. Every farmer in B.C. and on the Island is struggling, but we can build facilities to deal with drug addicts and homeless people.

BOUQUET To the lady at Woodgrove post office who went out of her way to personally deliver a car seat to my house after work. It made the world of difference to a mom with a husband working overseas who could not get there to collect it with both children and their car seats and stroller in the car.

BEEF To the Nanaimo car dealership for mailing out the unsolicited, laminated promotion card, which cannot be recycled, to households. Your marketing firm and your dealership should be more environmentally friendly.

BOUQUET To the young blonde mother with her two little boys for the latté she bought me in Costco. What a sweet and thoughtful thing to do.

BEEF To the city for refusing to install traffic lights and a roundabout at Biggs Road and Jingle Pot Road. There is a new, huge housing development and trucks adding to the lineup chaos.

BOUQUET To Lara at Mid Island Cabinets for excellent customer service. You saved my marriage and our kitchen looks amazing.

BEEF Please make more start-up/merge lanes from businesses onto the old Island Highway at Rutherford Road and Turner Road.

BOUQUET To nurse Albert in emergency. Thank you for taking such an interest in a rare condition and for being a star at IV inserts. I didn’t even feel it. I know you will have passed your final qualification for emergency room nurse. You were so kind and caring.

BEEF To the people living on Wildlife Place. I don’t do hours of yardwork for your cats to have a perfect bathroom. Try to be good neighbours and keep them inside.

BOUQUET To Brehaut Landscaping. Steve topped several trees for us while pointing out some safety concerns. He is a fast, efficient worker and he and his helper did a first-class cleanup, all-included, for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend him.

BEEF To whoever is holding the reins on farmers. So what if they build a second dwelling or sell cider, beer or vegetables?

BOUQUET To the very kind lady at the Nanaimo Bakery for the use of her cellphone to call for a ride home for my elderly friend. Very much appreciated.

BEEF To Employment Insurance for the bureaucracy that dehumanizes people who are on public assistance, and the payout is not a real reality living wage.

BOUQUET To everybody who writes into Beefs & Bouquets. Thoughtful and entertaining for all folks in Nanaimo. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

BEEF To the chain restaurant that charges for a slice of lemon with a glass of water. A slap in the face to patrons who spend money on their over-priced meals.

BOUQUET I would like to extend my sincere admiration to Mike W. who wrote about ALS for his heart-felt letter to the Bulletin. Thank you for giving awareness to those suffering from this terrible disease. I wish you peace.

BEEF To the lawyer and my sister. You are both liars. Karma will get you both.

BOUQUET To Phoebe, the most gracious hostess at Shanghai City where the food is always delicious, and they never scrimp on their takeout orders.

BEEF To the City of Nanaimo. Visiting from Alberta and looking for the hospital, we drove south on the highway and could not see any hospital signs. Fortunately I stopped at a red light behind two ambulances and followed them. Thankfully this was not an emergency.

BOUQUET To Fay the pharmacist at Nanaimo hospital and Dr. Parkins at Medical Arts for their continued support and compassion dealing with my elderly mother with many medical issues. She has been very fortunate to be treated as a VIP by two professionals who have comforted her in her twilight times.

BEEF To the retired real estate agent who misled and deceived grieving parents years ago when he offered a cemetery plot at Cedar, then took it back. Now they can’t be buried with their daughter.
