Automated garbage pickup isn’t that easy

A more complete description of this garbage collection automation system would be interesting.

To the Editor,

Re: Garbage collection will improve, Letters, July 12.

This garbage collection automation sounds like magic when residents will be ‘given’ wheeled carts, the driver will remain inside the vehicle and the carts will be lifted and dumped into the truck by a mechanical arm. I have seen similar automation in another country, expensive equipment and it required several additional workers to line up the carts both before and after being lifted.

A more complete description of this garbage collection automation system would be interesting, including the costs for additional staff and automation equipment. I have great sympathy with the current truck drivers who do all the work. Driving the truck, hopping out and in and emptying the cans, all on their own without any one to help them. Even one helper would be a great improvement for the drivers in the present system.

To the Editor,

Re: Garbage rules too fussy, Letters, July 5.

Instead of complaining, why not try and adjust to our Nanaimoite ways? Here is a thought: why don’t you put your garbage in one large bag instead of two smaller ones? Oh, that means you may have to change the size of your refuse container? Big deal. You now live in Nanaimo so please adapt and blend in with our ways.

Welcome to our beautiful community.
