Arts groups need to be self-supporting

Re: Cultural groups rewarded with city funding, Feb. 11.

To the Editor,

Re: Cultural groups rewarded with city funding, Feb. 11.

There was a recent article regarding the amount of taxpayer dollars that the city gave to various groups in the city. It came to several hundred thousand dollars.

Before the city gives any of these groups any financial support, it should realize that taxpayer dollars belong to the taxpayers, not some art group or other social outfit.

The taxpayer dollars the city gave away should have been used for municipal projects, the purpose for which this money was originally collected.

How’s this for a novel idea instead?

If you belong to some kind of group, regardless of its purpose, and you need financial support for it, instead of expecting the taxpayers to support you, get busy and work for it. Sell tickets or have a garage sale.

If it happens that you can’t raise enough money on your own, it just might be that nobody is interested in whatever your group might be.

In that case, why should you expect the taxpayers to support you, instead of them using their money for the municipal projects the money was originally intended for?
