TURCH, Walter

Born in Shanghai, China, Walter came to Canada in 1952, settling in Edmonton, Alberta where he met his wife, Anne. Later he joined the Provincial Government where he worked for the Department of Education as Associate Director of Finance. Upon retirement, he moved his family to Nanaimo, in 1989.

Before purchasing a power boat, Walter enrolled in the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron where he achieved certificates of advanced courses. Being a hard worker and an enthusiastic member of the Nanaimo Squadron, he served on the Vancouver Island North District Council as District Training Officer and Administration Officer. In 1994-95 Walter served as Nanaimo Squadron Commander. In 2000 he became the District Commander responsible for 11 Squadrons for the North District. In 2001 he was re-elected to serve a second term to carry out the same busy schedule. From 2002-2006 he served on the Squadron’s Nominating Committee. From 2007-2010 he served as Auditor for the Nanaimo Squadron as well as for the Vancouver Island North District. In 2011 Walter received his lifetime membership award.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Anne; son, Shane; daughter-in-law, Louise; and his loyal German Shepherd, Sable.

The family would like to thank the compassionate Nursing staff and Hospice Volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of NRGH or to the Nanaimo SPCA.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 2-4 p.m.. in the reception room at First Memorial located at 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo.
