Died July 26th 2017 at the age of 93 with his family by his side.
Tom, as he was known, was born in rural Saskatchewan on October 8th, 1923. He was a farm boy raised during the Depression. He persevered through hard work and determination, and after highschool, went on to graduate from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Tom led an amazing career. He revolutionized the pulp and paper industry with his inventions, and was even written about in engineering books. With his wife Lucille by his side he travelled the world through work and for pleasure. They lived for many years in South Africa, Florida, Washington State, and Vancouver, among other locations, before settling in Nanaimo, BC.
During his “retirement” he was many things. However his favorite place was his work shed. He could always be found listening to the likes of Sinatra on his old crackly radio, while tinkering on his latest project, and filing the air with sweet cigar smoke. In later life, Tom became an avid movie watcher from the comfortable position of his recliner.
Tom was predeceased by his mother Mildred Dunbar, his father William Dunbar, and his son Thomas Dunbar JR. “Tommy”.
He leaves behind his wife of over 50 years, Lucille Dunbar. His four daughters, Laurie Dunbar (Bryan), Marilynne Dunbar, Josee Belisle (Mike), and Sophie Crouch (David). He was an active Grandpa to his six grandchildren, Philip Venter (Melissa), Natacha Rushton (Jeff), Richard Dunbar Yaffe (Adrienne), Heather Dunbar, Alexandra Crouch, and Gaelen Crouch. And a beloved Papa to his five great-grandchildren. As well as, numerous cousins and his chihuahua, Tinkerbell.
Tom always enjoyed a good drink, a good cigar, and loved the smell of roses. “It is not length of life, but depth of life.” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. Tom was lucky enough to have both.
We will Love you and miss you, but never forget you.
