We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved Ray Kulai on January 23, 2009 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Ray was born in Ladysmith. He graduated from the Victoria Normal School, the University of British Columbia and Syracuse University. He taught in local elementary and secondary schools prior to being assigned as the Supervising Principal of the North Elementary Schools. Later he was appointed Director of Elementary Instruction, then Assistant Superintendent of School District 68.

He will be sadly missed and long remembered by his wife Shirley, daughter Kim (Barry) Engele, grandchildren Kody and Jack, son George (Lea), sister in law Georgina Kulai, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In 1967 Ray was awarded the Canada Medal for Service to the Nation and was recognized with a life-membership in the BC Parent-Teacher Association. He co-founded the Big Brothers Organization in Nanaimo. Professionally he served as the President of the Directors of Instruction of BC and on committees of the BCTF. He also was a member Nanaimo Downtown Rotary Club and a past President of the Nanaimo Probus Club.

Ray followed world events, enjoyed history, appreciated the outdoors, photography, sports and until recently, travel.

There will be no funeral service by request. Donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
