Nov 17, 1929 - Apr 7, 2018
Sloan, Mary Margaret was born in Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan on November 17, 1929 to William and Louise Parisien, the oldest daughter and one of five children. Margaret passed away on April 7, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Growing up on the Prairies during the Great Depression, life wasn't easy. It was during these formative years that Margaret developed her strong sense of family, her selflessness in helping others and her "I can do it myself" attitude.

After leaving the Prairies and marrying the love of her life, Jack Sloan, they moved to Wellington and so began the next step in her extraordinary life. She became involved with the Girl Guides of Canada, beginning as a Tawny Owl in 1962 and continuing her long service with the Girl Guides until her death.

Margaret and Jack founded Sloan's Heating and were founding members of the Nanaimo Toy Run.

Together, Margaret and Jack also found time for the Nanaimo Search and Rescue, square dancing, camping the back roads of BC and snowmobiling. Margaret was immensely proud of her Metis heritage and laid the foundation for the Mid Island Metis Nation, known then as the Pacific Metis Federation, by hosting the first meetings at her home. Margaret was respected in her role as an Elder with the Mid Island Metis Nation and she also became an Elder in Residence at the Vancouver Island University.

Predeceased by her husband Jack, son Wayne and grandson, Ryan, Margaret is survived by daughters Trish (Keith) Crumpton and Shirley (Chris) Nicholson, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Margaret's life will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Pleasant Valley Social Centre on 6100 Doumont Road, Nanaimo at 1:00 pm.
