COPELAND, Kathleen Irene
September 6, 1927 ~ August 31, 2009
Passed away peacefully with family at her side. Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Richard (Dick); her parents (Thomas James and Kathleen Catherine Irwin); and her sister Marion. She is survived and fondly remembered by her children, Brian (Anne), Murray, Barry (Dianne) and Brenda (Russ); her grandchildren, Kathleen, Aaron, Kimberly, Meagan and Eirene; her siblings Mabel, Jim, Richard, Doreen, Eva, Brian and David; her uncle Albert (Esther) Irwin; and many nieces and nephews.
Irene was born in Agassiz, BC and met her husband, Dick, at the Robertson Boarding House in Victoria. They made Nanaimo their home in 1955, and also joined the Gabriola community a few years later with their vacation cabin.
Irene was a primary school teacher in Fruitvale, Rossland, Calgary, Victoria and Nanaimo at Rutherford and McGirr Elementary Schools. She loved her family and teaching children, gently and determinedly fulfilling the highest of commitments to being a compassionate wife, mother, sister and teacher.
The family gives their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the caring staff at Nanaimo Home Support and Dufferin Place – Cedar Unit as well as Dr. Lane. Irene’s circle of friends gave her and her family loving support and meaningful companionship for which we are truly grateful.
A service of remembrance and celebration will be held at First Memorial, 1720 Bowen Rd., on Saturday September 12 at 1:00 p.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nanaimo/Ladysmith Retired Teacher Association Awards for Students Fund (in care of the Nanaimo District Teacher’s Association Office.)
