Hiles, Ileen Pearl

(nee Rasmussen)

October 20th, 1928 – January 3rd, 2015

With great sadness, the family of Ileen Hiles announces her passing. Ileen passed away peacefully at Kiwanis Lodge, Nanaimo, BC on January 3rd, 2015 at the age of 86. The youngest of 4 girls she was predeceased by her sisters Elsie, Mary and Margaret, and her grandson David. Ileen is survived by her husband Melvin; four sons Wayne (Sharon), Ken (Janice), Clint, and Garth (Siobhan); eight grandchildren Desmond, Clayton, Sheena, Lyndsey, Clint Junior, Randy, Andrea, and Tyler; Seven great-grandchildren Cole, Brandon, Hailey, Lina, Clara, Sadie, and June.

Ileen was born in 1928 on the family farm in Parry, SK. In 1950 she moved to Victoria to be near Mel who was in the navy. In 1952 they married and had four children, all boys, to whom she dedicated many years to raising on her own as Mel was often at sea for months at a time. Ileen’s door was always open for a friend in need or just a visit. When Mel retired in 1973 they moved to Lake Cowichan where she spent many years as a volunteer with the group Beta Sigma Phi. In 1990 she and Mel moved to Nanaimo to be closer to family. She began her volunteer work with the Kiwanis Lodge in 1993 after her mother became a resident. She continued until Christmas 2013 when health issues ended her life’s work as a volunteer caring for others. Many thanks to the caregivers in Kiwanis Lodge where Ileen spent her last five months with her husband Mel.

A celebration of her life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1720 Bowen Road (off Townsite), Nanaimo, BC on Saturday January 10th at 1:00pm. Reception to follow on site.
