Gordon Vipond of Nanaimo, BC
Beloved husband of Jane Vipond, passed away peacefully while vacationing in Indio, California in the early morning of January 17, 2010. Born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 12, 1931, Gord had a very full and rewarding life. His business career, which started with IAC, took him from Calgary, Lethbridge, Montreal and Campbell River, before the family settled in Nanaimo, where Gordon owned Gordon’s Homes Sales up until his retirement. Boating was a huge part of Gordon and Jane’s life and they spent many years exploring our wonderful coast including a great trip to Alaska. Their love of travel took them all over the world, but they found their second home in southern California where they have wintered for many years.
Gord was also very involved in the community with membership in the Lions Club, Nanaimo Probus, Manufactured Housing Association of BC and was a long time member of the Nanaimo Yacht Club.
Gord had uncanny timing in telling a joke and a real talent at making people feel comfortable and welcome. Young and old loved Gord.
Gord was predeceased by his siblings Blair, Margaret, Jean and David. Left to mourn his loss are Jane, his wife of 57 years; children Linda, Cathy (Jim), Gord (Be), Ken (Angela); his cherished grandchildren Kate (Stephen), Darcy, Danielle, Adrian, Delta, Amy, Michael, Olivia, Mitchell and Mikaela; sisters-in-law Lori Hougan (John) and Erica Vipond; brothers-in-law Bill Hilger, George Weiss and John Irwin (his hockey watching buddy); as well as many nieces and nephews throughout BC and Alberta, Hobo’s Inn Alumni and a lifetime of friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Denegri, Dr. Kingston, Dr. Booth and Dr. Forrester for their excellent care.
Please join family and friends for a celebration of Gordon’s life planned for Friday, February 12, 2010 at Nanaimo Yacht Club starting at 3pm. No flowers by request, if so desired donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Fund or Kidney Foundation.
