Genowefa Jean A. Kopec

June 13, 1913 – February 10, 2011

Passed peacefully at the age of 97 years. Predeceased by two brothers, Casimir (1971) and Henry Kopec (1982), Jean leaves behind three daughters: Vivian Anita Fownes (Ron), Joan Marie Sawicki (Gary Runka), and Diana Marion Bertram (Ray); five grandchildren: Sheryl Bell (Rob), Lynn Fownes, Michael Fownes (Cher), Kim Lewis and Wade Lewis; two step-grandchildren: Shaundehl Runka and Cayla Runka (and son, Marek) and two great grandchildren: Ella and Gabrielle Fownes.

Born in Vancouver, of Polish parents, Jean began her working career in the printing department at the Vancouver Sun. She later became a bookkeeper, a non-traditional role for women at the time. Jean was an accomplished seamstress and an avid flower gardener. Proud of her Polish heritage, Jean was famous for her cabbage rolls. She also loved music and dancing; she played piano and, at age 74, took up ballroom dancing, entering competitions and winning trophies. Jean lived most of her life in Vancouver before moving to Nanaimo in 2001. Never one to recognize her own achievements, Jean was admired for her courage and perseverance through the many challenges that life sent her way. Strong willed and engaged in daily life to the end, Jean spent her final days in the excellent care of the staff at Chemainus Health Care Centre, surrounded by her three daughters and others who loved her.

No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Chemainus Health Care Foundation for use in renovating the flower gardens at the Centre.

May you finally rest in peace, Mother.

You have earned it.
