February 26, 1926 – April 10, 2021
Frieda was the third of nine children born to Jacob & Anna Matthies. She was born in Mariental, Ukraine and emigrated with her family to Canada in 1926. She was raised in the prairie provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta; moving to British Columbia when she was 19 years old.
Frieda was employed by the Vancouver Sun for 29 years. She retired to Sechelt in 1986 where she pursued her passion for gardening and quilting. Her gardens were always in bloom and her quilts incorporated the colours of the west coast that she loved.
In 2013 she moved to Nanaimo, surrounding herself with the love and affection of her niece and family. In 2017 she moved to the Independent Living Home Long Lake Chateau, and her final move was to the Dover House Long Term Care Home in May 2019 where she died peacefully in her sleep.
Frieda is survived by her sisters Hilda, Selma, Linda and Betty (Bruce); four nieces and three nephews; eight great nephews and three great nieces. Her memory will be cherished by many and she will be remembered for her kind, gentle and creative soul.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
