Hannay

Flo (Florence)

We are saddened to announce the passing of our vibrant, gracious and wonderful Mother Flo (Florence) Hannay on October 20th, 2016 at the age of 92 at Nanaimo Seniors Village. Flo is survived by her daughter Lynne Hannay, her son John Akenhead, her cherished granddaughter Toni Akenhead, several nieces (Linda Stump, Karen Mullen) and nephews (Laurie Hedberg, Bill Mullen, Barry Mullen). She was predeceased by her first husband, Tony (Orville) Akenhead, by her second husband Jim Hannay, her parents John and Florence Mullen, and her siblings Helen Hedberg, Aileen Lowres and Ken Mullen.

Flo was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan and served in the Canadian Air Force during WW2. After the war, she came to Nanaimo for a visit and stayed. Flo owned and operated Nanaimo Driving School for many decades. As an active community member, Flo volunteered for Meals on Wheels and, as President of the Altrusea Club, she helped create the childrens’ playground at Beban Park.

Mom was a smart business woman who loved to entertain, to fish, and to shop. With Jim, Mom travelled throughout North America and the world. But most important, Mom was passionate about her extended family. We will miss that smile and mischievous personality. Rest in Peace Mom.

The family thanks the staff of the full care unit of Nanaimo Seniors Village for the care they provided Mom for many years and for their compassion they demonstrated for Flo and her family.

Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, November 4 at St. Andrews United Church on Wesley Street. The family invites all to remain for light refreshments.
