Emily SHAW

June 25, 2002

SHAW - Emily (previously Kenefick, nee Schmitz) passed away June 25, 2002 at her daughters’ home. Emily is survived by her loving family; daughter Arlene Blundell, son Dave Kenefick, son-in-law Greg Blundell, daughter-in-law Margaret Kenefick, grandchildren Mike Kenefick, Brenda Kenefick, Art Blundell, Nancy Blundell, Alison Symonide (nee Kenefick), Meggan Kenefick and adopted family Wendy, Ken, Chris and Derek Chung and Le Bui. Emily was born in Glenbush, Saskatchewan in 1915. She grew up on the prairies and moved to the West Coast with her husband Vince Kenefick and their three children, Jim, Joe and Arlene, in 1944. They settled in Nanaimo in 1948 where their fourth child, Dave was born. Widowed in 1980, she later married Dennis Shaw. Emily worked as a receptionist for Drs. McKerricher and Bowen before retiring in 1974. After retirement, Emily took up bridge, bowling, golf and gardening. In addition to being a member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge III, she was a devoted member of St. Andrews United Church for many years. Last year, she was proud to have published her memoirs under the title “Just Emily”. Emily’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Her love and devotion to her family is only exceeded by their love and devotion to her. One of Emily’s favorite sayings was, “Enjoy each day to the fullest”. The greatest remembrance you could give to Emily is to live by those words. The family would like to thank the many home care workers who attended to Emily over the past few months, especially Charlie and Angela. You made sure she was comfortable and happy and were of great support to the family. A special thanks to family and friends who have had Emily in their thoughts and prayers.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews United Church in Nanaimo on Friday July 5 at 1:00pm. As Emily loved flowers, arrangements brought to the service or flowers planted in her honor would be a loving memory. If preferred, donations could be made to the St. Andrews United Church Building Fund in her name as a memoriam.
