Elizabeth (nee) Law Carabinus

September 15, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mom and grandmother, Betty, in Nanaimo on September 15, 2015. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her over the many years. Betty was born in Innisfail, Alberta to Ada and Reverand Albert James Law on March 8, 1923.

She lived and worked in Edmonton, Alberta; Mesa, Arizona; and British Columbia. She leaves her daughter, Shirley (Dave) Maudie, grandsons Greg and Steven (Nina); daughter-in-law Donna Fleming, granddaughters, Renèe and Adrienne (Lindsay) Finnegan, great grandson, Devlyn; and her son Gerry (Kristin) Fleming, and grandchildren Daniel and Kate (Alan) Walker and great grandson, Angus; and her brother Jack Law of Edmonton. Betty was predeceased by her husbands: George Fleming and Andrew Karabinus; her siblings: Allan, Joy, Cecil and Mary; and her oldest son Douglas Fleming. Mom loved being with her friends and family.

She was a wonderful singer, delighting all who sang with her, reaching the high notes with ease. Even though she never became a nurse as she had wanted, she spent her life taking care of others and encouraging them to reach their goals. The middle chapter of her life found her in Arizona as part of the Karabinus family, and she greatly enjoyed travelling extensively with Andrew. For the last part of her life, Betty was in Victoria and Nanaimo.

The family would like to thank the folks at Berwick on the Lake for making her feel at home. A memorial celebration will be held at Berwick on the Lake in Nanaimo on September 26, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to CNIB, or a charity of your choice.
