Drago Sumina
April 24, 1930 - September 22, 2017
With heavy hearts and great sorrow we announce the passing of Drago Sumina our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Surrounded by his wife and family, Drago passed away after a courageous battle from a variety of medical issues.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister Danica, and brothers Ilija, Marko, Dako, and Nikola. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years Dragica, daughter Jasmin (Rob), grandchildren Michael and Stephanie, as well as his nieces and nephews.
Drago was born in Lijesce, Hrvatska, Croatia. Growing up on a family farm during WWII, he later moved to Zagreb and became an accomplished Machinist and owner of his own shop.
He immigrated to Canada with his wife and daughter in 1969 and settled in Nanaimo. He was a co-owner of the Columbus hotel for a few years before he once again worked in his trade as a heavy-duty mechanic for John Deere until his retirement.
Drago, the man who could fix anything, was the happiest spending his time with his grandchildren and watching them at every sporting event and dance recital. He also enjoyed gardening, making wine, making homemade sausages, fixing everything we broke, and playing Bocce with his Croatian buddies.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and hospital staff at NRGH with special thanks to Dr. Anna Dabu and Drago's longtime kidney specialist Dr. Suvi Rasaiah.
We would especially like to thank the nurses and staff on the first floor for their kindness and compassion with gratitude to nurses Abbey and Karen and HCA's Geod and Alice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Friday, September 29th, 2017 at 11 am. Burial to follow at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens.
