In Loving Memory ~

Dr. Thomas Cyril Eid, loving husband, father, grandfather, dear friend to many and highly-regarded Canadian urologist, passed away peacefully in his home with family by his side on December 28, 2023.

He is mourned by his wife Jeanne, his children (Erick, Elisabeth and Diana) and their spouses (Tina, Stuart and David) as well as his grandchildren (Matthew, Isabelle, Mackenzie and Campbell). He will also be deeply missed by his many friends whose lives he touched.

He is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Johanna, his brother Freddy and his sister Johanna.

Tom was born on July 5, 1933 in Mannheim, Germany and was brought as a baby by his parents to live in Macklin, Saskatchewan. As an adolescent, Tom attended Vancouver College, a residential boys school and then secondary school at Campion College in Regina. As he skipped a grade, he graduated at the age of 16. He was known as a brilliant student with a photographic memory and great sense of humour.

Tom completed a pre-med degree at the University of Saskatchewan and then his medical degree at the University of Toronto Medical College, where he graduated in 1956. Shortly after graduating, he interned at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He subsequently returned to Macklin in 1957 and practiced medicine side by side with his father for a year.

Tom then went on to complete two years of a general surgery residency program at the University of Alberta Hospital and a three-year urology residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. It was in Minneapolis that Tom met Jeanne, a young, beautiful nurse. They were married on May 26, 1962, the beginning of over 60 years of a loving marriage. They would return many times over the years to Minnesota to visit Jeanne's family.

Tom and Jeanne moved to Edmonton in 1964. They enjoyed an incredibly rich life, working and "playing hard" while raising three children. Tom practiced urology at the University of Alberta Hospital where he was recognized as an outstanding academic urologist.

Perhaps the greatest lessons he provided to the many residents he trained came through his demonstration of the human side of medicine. He is remembered very fondly by his residents and his patients who expressed deep gratitude at every opportunity.

In addition to Tom's incredible busy life as a urologist, he and Jeanne enjoyed a very active social life, frequently hosting large gatherings of friends in their beautiful home on the river valley. They also savoured many holidays with family and friends such as skiing and hiking in the Rockies, visiting Hawaii, Bali, Minnesota, and spending recurring winters in Scottsdale, Arizona.

In June 2015, Tom and Jeanne moved to Nanaimo to escape the harsh Edmonton winters and to be close to their daughter Diana, her husband David and their two grandsons, Mackenzie and Campbell. In Nanaimo, they enjoyed a rich social life with friends and family.

He will be remembered for his incredible sense of humour and a great ability to tell wonderful stories and hilarious jokes. His family and close friends will always cherish his love, kindness, generosity, intelligence and calming presence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders or the Salvation Army. Information respecting a funeral mass and celebration of life will be forthcoming.
