Doreen was born in Surrey, England and met her Canadian military husband, Thomas Gunderson, at a dance in 1943. They were married in 1945 and he brought her to Canada as a war bride in 1946. They settled in Spiritwood, SK where they lived and worked the hard farming life and started their family. In 1956 the family, now with 3 small children moved to her beloved B.C. where she and Thomas enjoyed many years of boating.
Doreen is predeceased by her daughter Evelyn Gunderson in 1970, husband Thomas in 1983, and daughter Diane Arbanas in 2012. She is survived by her daughter Toni (Ray), son Chris (Karen), five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and will be sadly missed.
She was a very caring, hardworking person who was always ready to help others. She loved to cook and bake, and hosted many extended family dinners. She will always be fondly remembered by her grandchildren for baking the best sticky buns. One of her favorite things was to shop, and would never miss an opportunity to be out and about to go shopping. She was a great lover of animals and was never without a dog, cat or rabbit, or all three!
The family would like to give a huge thank you to the nurses and care staff who were more than just caregivers, but became dear friends over the past 6 years at Wexford Creek in Nanaimo.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Doreen's memory to the SPCA, which she loved and had always supported
