April 6, 1927 - January 19, 2021
Sam, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 19, 2021 at Malaspina Chartwell Care home.
Born in Nanaimo, at a young age Sam and his brother Archie lost both parents and were subsequently raised by their aunt Cecilia James. Up until his passing, Sam was the oldest living member of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Sam spent his entire life in Nanaimo, starting an apprenticeship in carpentry with Wheatcroft Construction, and then went on to work for over 25 years as a carpenter at Harmac until his retirement.
His love for the great outdoors made Sam an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed numerous pastimes including curling, a drummer in the Nanaimo Pipe Band, one of the original Nanaimo Clippers, and member of the 'Lotus Gang'.
Sam was predeceased by his parents Domico and Elizabeth (James), and brother Archie (2001). He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years Evangeline, their three children Bonnie, Brenda (Gary), Robert (Shelly), stepson Bill (Dinie), and his numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sam was loved by many family and friends. His genuine kindness and joyfulness will be missed by all.
A celebration of Sam's Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society.
