It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Dennis, beloved brother and uncle. He was born in Carragana, Saskatchewan, one of many siblings parented by John and Elizabeth Best. The family moved to Nanaimo in 1937 where Dennis attended Brechin School and later John Shaw High School, after which he served in the RCAF from 1946 - 1947. He then became a surveyor on the Kemano Tunnel Power House Project and then later settled into a long time career as a power saw mechanic from 1951 - 1988 some of which was spent with Island Chainsaw Equipment and Fedji & Gunderson. He retired in 1988.
Den was a long time member of the Nanaimo Golf Club where he at one time held the honor of Club Handicap Champion and even managed to eke out 2 hole in ones...not too bad at all. He also was a pretty good distance swimmer and at one point a pretty darn good amateur landscape artist and he enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles while enjoying his favorite beverage.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth; brothers Doug and Bob; sisters Dolly, Kathleen, Margaret and Barbara. He is survived by brother Ken (Lefty) Best; and sisters Joyce Kotchonoski (Edmonton) and Betty (Barry) Darby and numerous nieces and nephews and their extended families.
Our thanks to the staff of the 5th Floor and the Palliative Care Unit of NRGH for their care during his stay.
There will be no service by request. His family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date.
