McKie, Brent

Sadly for many, Brent passed over on December 17, 2005. He showed much courage and strength over the past few years as he faced the challenges of cancer.

Born in 1959 to Hugh and Norma McKie, he spent his childhood years growing with his brother Brad, twin brother Blair, along with twin sisters Wendy and Wanda.

Moving from Manitoba to Nanaimo in 1969 set the stage for Brent to develop many long term friendships. Brent met Jane Wall, daughter of Ken and Laura, and they were married in 1982. Over their 25 years together they embraced five children: Brandon, Cory, Riley, Rachel and Orval. Family was extremely important to Brent, he was a generous and devoted father who gave much love and took great pride in all his children.

Brent grew up with an immense love for sports; this passion remained with him throughout his life. He incorporated his love for sports personally and professionally. Hockey in particular brought much joy to Brent and all that knew him were well aware of his loud enthusiasm for the Montreal Canadiens.

After working for Shoppers Drug Mart for 11 years, Brent chose to take specialized training and started his career working with children, youth and their families. He became employed with Nanaimo Family Life and later the Child Development Centre.

Brent often spoke of how he loved the farm life he and Jane had built together and by surrounding himself with nature, children, good friends, pets, he felt much joy and lived his life with purpose.

Brent's heartfelt ways, sense of humor and zest for life had a way of lifting many spirits and he will be missed by all who knew him.
