Arthur (Mac) McDONALD

October 24, 2008

McDONALD, Arthur (Mac)

1922 - 2008

For everything there is a season, a time for joy, a time for sorrow, and a time for remembering a life with thanks and gratitude. Mac left us on October 24, 2008, bound for that great fishing hole in the sky. A gentle man, cheerful, positive, and patient, he was proud to be a Maritime boy and to live out his life by the Pacific Ocean. That life was spent doing for others; serving his country in WW II and later at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He used his ingenuity, creativity, and talent as a machinist and a cabinet-maker to improve the lives of both physicians and patients. He loved fishing, antique cars, The Nanaimo Fish and Game Club, The Mid-Vancouver Island Maritime Modelers Club, and The Loren S. Thompson (his father-in-law) Gallery at the Port Theatre. Mac particularly enjoyed building things from wood, including furniture, boats, and model ships. He wore many hats in his life, carnival worker, private detective, race car driver, night club singer, champion distance swimmer, to name a few. His loss leaves a hole in our lives that nothing can fill but his memory will live in our hearts forever. There will be no service at Mac's request but all who knew him are invited to join other friends and family in remembering him in pictures, words, and music at the Port Theatre's Harmac Pacific Room on October 31, 2008 at 2:30 PM. Anyone who has "Mac memorabilia" and would like to share it may bring it along. A special thank you to Dr. Lane, Dr. Love, the other physicians, and the kind and caring staff of the palliative care unit at NRGH. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Nanaimo Community Hospice Society or The Port Theatre Endowment Fund.
