"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth...And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth..." Our deeply loved Husband, Father, Grand-Father, Brother, and friend has made his final flight. This man, second to none, did everything in his power to elevate the dreams of those he loved. Born in Vancouver and raised on the Island, Alan was a man who lived by a strong moral compass, personified selflessness, and gave generously so others could succeed. He served his country as an Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force and worked diligently in his career as heavy-duty mechanic. He followed his own dream to fly airplanes only when the time was right - it was his passion. He also served on Search and Rescue and welcomed any chance to learn new skills.
Alan was ever grateful for the remarkable bond he shared with his wife Elizabeth. Their devotion to each others' wellness, health, and happiness was unparalleled. His children meant the world to him: Jacqueline, Dee (Andy) Hodson-Gilmore, Michael, and Victoria. He is also remembered by his first wife, the mother of his children, Lilwen (Leo) Kolodychuk, as well as his precious grandchildren: Jeremy (Trisha) Hodson, Justine Breingan, Jamie Breingan, Jessie (Jessica) Breingan, Jan (Nicole) Van Herwaarden, Nathaniel (Jody) Meir, Katrina (Josh) Gerling, Daniel Hodson, and Caden Hodson. His grandchildren blessed him with 16 beautiful great-grandchildren whose very lives honour this special man. Alan is also remembered by his dear siblings John (Linda) Hodson, Marlene (Joe) Stevens, Rick (Sandy) Hodson, Tom (Annamarie) Gray, Judith Roper, Becky (Terry) Goddard, and Heather Cavanagh. As well as his sisters and brothers in-law.
He is respected and loved by Elizabeth's children Stirling (Sandy) Kelly, Leith Kelly, Feron (Duff) Walker, son-in-law Randy Forbes, and their wonderful families. Alan was also loved by Elizabeth's two oldest, Arlene Forbes and Cholene Begin, who left this life before him. Our families offer their humble gratitude to the care givers at Nanaimo Seniors Village who showed Alan kindness and care in his time of absolute need - thank you. The family will celebrate Alan's life in a private gathering, but we appreciate your warm thoughts. "...And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod...The high untrespassed sanctity of space...Put out my hand and touched the face of God." Thank you, Alan, for everything - you will be missed.
