Commuters can expect delays and traffic disruptions on Northfield Road between the Nanaimo Parkway and Bowen Road in the coming weeks as the City of Nanaimo works on ‘Midtown Gateway’ road reconstruction and midtown water supply projects.

From Tuesday to Friday, May 23-26, there will alternating lane closures on Northfield Road between Bowen Road and the Nanaimo Parkway. Traffic signals at the Northfield and Boxwood roads intersection will be turned off and all drivers, pedestrians and cyclists must obey the direction of flag persons.

On May 29, westbound traffic on Northfield Road will be reduced to one lane west of Boxwood Road.

From May 30 to June 1, Boxwood Road will be closed north of Northfield Road, along with the left turn lane on Northfield Road. Vehicle access to the Petro-Canada gas station and Waves car wash at 2300 Northfield Rd. will be via Northfield Road.

From June 1-9, the northbound lane of Boxwood Road, north of Northfield Road, will be closed, along with the left turn lane on Northfield Road. Vehicle access entering the gas station and car wash will be via Northfield Road. Pedestrians are advised to watch for sidewalk closures and follow detour and the direction of flag persons on duty. Cyclists are encouraged to dismount and use sidewalks.

All businesses will remain open and accessible during construction.

Construction work will typically take place Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but will extend to 24 hours per day from Tuesday to Friday, May 23-26, to complete pipe installation across Northfield Road. Traffic disruptions will remain in effect during non-working hours and weekends.
