Winter driving conditions have arrived and North Island highways contractor Mainroad Contracting has issued a reminder that it doesn’t just mean snow and ice – it’s also fog, rain, poor visibility, and lack of daylight.
Mainroad North Island crews are patrolling service area highways and roads and will apply specific material to the road surface as determined by the forecast and actual weather conditions. Pre-storm activities typically include pre-salting/brining and monitoring the forecast closely.
“Road cones don’t disappear in winter…slow down and drive with extreme care near a Cone Zone, watch for crews. Stay alert and minimize distractions. Show respect for the person working at the side of the road. Make sure to give them space (move over to another lane, if it’s safe to do so) and obey traffic control,” General Manager Chris Cowley says.
Mainroad also says don’t just be prepared for winter driving but alsoremember to turn on your lights to help others see you.
In response to a high frequency of questions from the public during winter operations – Mainroad maintains an online FAQ which offers helpful resources. Their Call Centre operation is available 24/7 to report changing road conditions and debris – call toll free 1-877-215-7122, an operator will record and forward the information to crews on shift as well as dispatch additional personnel, and update Drive BC.
