NANAIMO – Roundup of what businesses and public facilities are open or closed over the holiday season.

For people sticking around town over the holidays, what is open and closed Christmas and New Year’s can narrow or broaden entertainment, shopping and even urgent health care choices.

Here is a brief roundup of what is open or closed and when.

Woodgrove Centre is closed Christmas Day, but open noon to 5 p.m. New Year’s Day.  Please check the shopping centre’s website at www.woodgrovecentre.com for operating hours over the holiday season.

Nanaimo North Town Centre is closed Christmas Day. Please visit www.nanaimonorth.com.

Country Club Centre: Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Please visit www.countryclubcentre.com.

Great Canadian Superstore: Open noon to 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. Closed Christmas Day. Open Boxing Day 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., New Year’s Eve 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., New Year’s Day 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Costco Wholesale: Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For holiday season operating hours Dec. 22 to Jan. 1, please call the store information line at 250-390-3231.

Wal-Mart: Currently open 24/7. Closed Christmas Day. Open New Year’s Day.

Ice arenas, pools and recreation centres are open through most of the holidays.

Frank Crane Arena, Cliff McNabb Arena and Nanaimo Ice Centre are open Dec. 26-31.

Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and Nanaimo Ice Centre will be closed Christmas Day, but are open noon to 5 p.m. Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for public swimming and skating.

Beban Park Complex is closed Christmas Eve at 3 p.m. and will remain closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. New Year’s Eve the complex will close at 3 p.m., but reopens later in the evening for Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture’s New Year’s Eve Finale event. The complex is closed New Year’s Day.

Oliver Woods Community Centre and Bowen Park Centre is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Oliver Woods closes 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Bowen Park Centre closes at 2 p.m. Christmas Eve and at 4 p.m. New Year’s Eve.

Avalon Theatres at Woodgrove Centre are showing afternoon matinees only Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). The cinema complex is open for evening showings only Christmas Day (Dec. 25), but is open for full regular hours on Boxing Day (Dec. 26).

New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) show times end at 8 p.m., returning to regular scheduled show times for New Year’s Day (Jan. 1).

Galaxy Cinemas at Nanaimo North Town Centre will close after the 8 p.m. showings Christmas Eve. Christmas Day showings start at 3:30 p.m.

The cinema complex resume sits regular operating hours on Boxing Day and continue for the remainder of the holiday season including New Year’s Day.

Nanaimo Airport is open with no changes in operating hours through the holidays.

Opening times vary for walk-in and urgent care clinics, but Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s emergency ward is the only place people can be guaranteed to find urgent medical attention on Christmas and New Year’s days.
