Firefighters and city workers rushed to the 300 block of Stewart Avenue in Nanaimo on Thursday afternoon to deal with a broken water main.

The main broke at about 2:30 p.m. next to a fire hydrant at the Rosehill Street intersection, sending a flood of water, mud and landscaping rocks down down Rosehill Street that forced the closure of Newcastle Avenue and flooded the Nanaimo Yacht Club parking lot.

Muddy water runoff continued to spread across Newcastle Channel and the Nanaimo Yacht Club marina.

No one was hurt, but it will take some time to clear the debris and repair the water main and section of road and sidewalk that was undermined by the flooding water.

Damage, if any, to nearby buildings has not been assessed.
