Vancouver Island University kicks off its inaugural Indigenous Speakers Series this Thursday (Nov. 26) when Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, in his role as Shqwi qwal for Indigenous Dialogue, delivers a keynote address, Daring Greatly Together: Re-imagining Canada.
His lecture will be followed by an audience question-and-answer session hosted by CBC journalist Laura Lynch. The conversation, delivered in partnership with The Laurier Institution and hosted by CBC Radio One’s Ideas, is the first event in an annual speakers series focused on reconciliation and engagement with Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
Atleo is a Ahousaht First Nation hereditary chief and former Chief of the Assembly of First Nations who served as VIU’s first chancellor from 2008 to 2014, and was appointed by B.C. Premier Christy Clark to the role of Shqwi qwal (speaker) for Indigenous Dialogue at VIU.
The event, hosted at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre on the Nanaimo campus, 900 Fifth St., Bldg 310, is open to the public, but space is limited, so please pre-register at http://goo.gl/EV1Biu.
