Fire investigators are probing the cause of a fire that destroyed an RV trailer and heavily damaged an adjacent home in Nanaimo early Tuesday.

According to Nanaimo Fire Rescue, the fire broke out just after midnight in the trailer, which was parked next to the house on the 600 block of Western Acres Road. The fire quickly spread to the house, burned through the soffits and into the attic and caused heavy fire and smoke damage to the home’s interior.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control quickly, but it took several hours before all hots spots in the home’s interior were snuffed out the and the fire was fully extinguished.

Two residents of the house and one person who was sleeping in the trailer have been displaced. No one was injured and the occupants are insured.

Firefighters searching the interior of the house also rescued a cat.

The investigation into what caused the fire is underway.

“All we can say right now is the fire isn’t considered suspicious,” Alan Millbank, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said at the scene Tuesday morning.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue credits smoke alarms, which activated, with allowing the residents time to evacuate safely and report the emergency.
