Three-vehicle crash claims life of Lantzville man

NANAIMO – Lantzville man dies in hospital following three-vehicle crash on Jingle Pot Road.

A 47-year-old man from Lantzville has died in hospital one week after being involved in a three vehicle crash on Jingle Pot Road.

The crash victim was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital Oct. 16 after sustaining injuries in a collision that happened at about 3:30 p.m. Nanaimo RCMP said a 2008 Mercedes Benz SUV travelling east on Jingle Pot Road swerved left into oncoming traffic near the Calder Road intersection and hit the victim's 1991 Chevy Astro van head-on. The van was then struck from behind by a Chevy pickup.

The victim died in hospital Wednesday.

The Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Section is continuing the investigation into the collision, but Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said the death does not change the nature of the investigation.

"It just stays as an investigation," Armstrong said. "Nothing changes. It's exactly the same."

Armstrong said she could not comment further on the investigation at this time.

Immediately following the crash, police said the 64-year-old driver of the Mercedes might have swerved into the van because of a possible medial issue.

Police have not determined what, if any, criminal code or motor vehicle act charges will be recommended against the driver of the Mercedes.
