A third solution for the Colliery dams has been pitched to B.C.’s comptroller of water rights.
Nanaimo city representatives are meeting with Glen Davidson, comptroller of water rights, in a closed meeting today (April 22) to talk about an alternative remediation option for the dams.
“What we’re hoping to have happen [Wednesday] is that the comptroller will see that it’s worthwhile to amend the order to allow the third option,” said Mayor Bill McKay, in reference to a dam-hardening solution by the firm GSI.
City council agreed last week to request a stay against a provincial order for the dams and file an appeal with the Environmental Appeal Board. They also opted to send the Dam Safety Section a beautification and dam-hardening concept. The work is estimated to cost less than $3 million.
