The Boys and Girls Club of Nanaimo has been the target of a recent rash of thefts that are having an impact on the organization’s day-to-day activities.

During the past two months, there have been eight reported thefts from the organization’s property on Fifth Street in Harewood.

Most have involved gas being siphoned and gas lines cut on vehicles. Recently installed security cameras have also been tampered with or simply stolen.

When gas lines are cut on Boys and Girls Club vehicles, it require a mechanical inspection, which can put the vehicles out of commission for several days, causing cancellations of children’s scheduled day trips.

"We have tried locking gas caps, moving vehicles to more visible locations, installing floodlights and security cameras,” said Linda Janes, Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club coordinator, in a press release. “None have had any measurable impact. These thefts have cost our program thousands of dollars.”

Anyone with information about these thefts, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com, text 274637, keyword Nanaimo or call 1-800-222-8477.
