Suspect in bike theft evades arrest

NANAIMO - Nanaimo RCMP thwart bike theft, but suspect gets away.

Residents in Hammond Bay might want to keep an eye out for a bike theft suspect who escaped arrest Wednesday.

Nanaimo RCMP received a call at about 4:20 a.m. from a home owner in the 5000 block of Hammond Bay Road who said a man had taken a bicycle from his carport.

An officer en route to the complaint spotted the suspect on the stolen bike and tried make an arrest. An altercation broke out during the arrest attempt, the suspect dropped the bike and fled into some bushes. The officer wasn’t injured and called a Police Services Dog team, which was unable to track down the suspect.

The stolen bike was returned to its owner.

The suspect is of unknown race, medium height and build, and wore a dark-coloured toque, winter jacket and thick gloves.
