The City of Nanaimo is inviting residents to head down to Maffeo Sutton Park to celebrate the nation’s 156th birthday this weekend.
Canada festivities are planned for Maffeo Sutton Park from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 1. The celebration starts with a celebration of flags and an opening ceremony, and entertainment will begin at 11:40 a.m.
Among the entertainers gracing the main stage will be American Idol contestant Cameron Whitcomb, the Doctors of Rock n’ Roll and Cross Parallel, and over at the cultural community stage, Vibe Dance Studio will be performing, as well as square dancers, flamenco dancers, Scottish country dancers and ballroom dancers.
There will be other complimentary activities for families to enjoy, including bouncy castles, crafts, interactive community booths, kayaking, face painting and a photo booth.
The Order of the Eastern Star will offer Canada Day cupcakes, while supplies last, and food vendors will be at Maffeo Sutton Park, selling their wares as well.
The city advised that there will be no on-site parking at Maffeo Sutton Park on Canada Day, other than limited accessible spaces. Parking will be available at parkades and lots in and around downtown Nanaimo.
Free shuttle bus service from Regional District of Nanaimo Transit will be offered to Canada Day festivities from the lower parking lot at Vancouver Island University and from Woodgrove Centre, and Hub City Cycles will offer free bicycle valet parking service from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Mayor Leonard Krog hopes people celebrate the nation’s birthday together on an occasion that marks the start of summer events in Nanaimo.
“Please join our community as we celebrate Canada Day on July 1 at Maffeo Sutton Park,” he said in a press release. “There will be so many things for families to enjoy.”
