A man released from prison after serving time for sexual assault was arrested on the weekend for allegedly assaulting a woman in Nanaimo.
John Ambrose Seward, 27, was arrest Saturday at about 6:30 p.m. for allegedly assaulting a woman along the railroad tracks near Caledonia Avenue.
The woman told police she was approached from behind, choked and assaulted by an unknown male. She managed to fight off her attacker, flee and flag down several passersby who called an ambulance that took her to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for what police described as significant injuries from the attack.
The victim gave her assailant’s description to police who arrested Seward a short distance from the where the attack occurred. He was held in custody and appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Tuesday to face charges of aggravated assault and intent to commit a sexual assault by choking.
Seward will remain in custody until his next court appearance July 14.
Seward has lived in Nanaimo since April 2 following his release from prison after serving 5.5 years for a number of sexual assaults in Port Alberni.
