Regional District of Nanaimo will provide Vancouver Island North Film Commission with $5,000 in 2017.

The non-profit film commission liaises and scouts locations for the film industry and had corresponded with the regional district in January seeking a centralized funding model, which would allow it to focus on facilitating film and TV in the area. Making funding request presentations to local government is time consuming, the commission said.

The $5,000 is based on a formula of $0.05 per $100,000 of assessed value for Lantzville and RDN electoral areas, including areas A, B and C.

Lantzville’s contribution would amount to $402, while Area A would contribute $596, Area B $557 and Area C $497, with the rest coming from other electoral districts in the regional district.

The board also voted in favour of holding discussions with the commission and other local government on a longer-term funding model.

The commission also requested $30,000 in money from the City of Nanaimo.
