A new parking area at a popular lake and recreation area in Nanaimo is now open.
The new parking lot at Westwood Lake Park, part of the first phase of improvements, includes 94 parking stalls, eight of which are accessible, the City of Nanaimo noted in a press release. The new lot, “safer for park users and the environment,” according to the city, is open as of Thursday, June 1.
Other elements include a storm water system that captures and filters rainwater, improved emergency access, new sidewalks, a bike lane and raised crosswalks.
Park users are asked to adhere to direction signs in the coming weeks.
While Phase 1 is nearing completion, the city reminds residents that the park remains an active construction site. The second phase of work will see the beach expanded, with accessibility improvements, picnic areas, seating, shade and green space, a completed loop trail, and accessible and inclusive washrooms contained in a new amenity building. Second-phase work is scheduled to begin in late 2024.
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said he hopes the improved accessibility makes Westwood Lake more enjoyable.
“Making park access easier and safer helps us all enjoy one of Nanaimo’s favourite places for fun, fitness and relaxation,” he said in the press release. “The beautiful natural surroundings of Westwood Lake attract locals and visitors year-round and continues to grow in popularity year after year.”
