A Nanaimo man died after crashing a pickup truck on a rural road south of the city.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, the crash happened at about 8:15 p.m. June 6, in the 2400 block of White Rapids Road in Extension.
“An older model black GMC pickup went off the road and came to rest against a tree,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson.
Extension Volunteer Fire Department, Nanaimo RCMP and B.C. Ambulance Service responded to the collision. The B.C. Coroners Service also attended and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
O’Brien described the victim as a 33-year-old man and a resident of Nanaimo, whose identity is not being released. His next of kin have been notified.
“Speed and alcohol are considered factors,” O’Brien said. “The vehicle was destroyed in the collision and was towed from the scene.”
A B.C. Hydro line was impacted as a result of the crash and a section of the road was closed to traffic in order to ensure first responders were safe.
Investigators would like to talk with anyone who has dash camera footage, witnessed the collision or has information about events leading up to it. Anyone with information is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2023-19068.
