Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s investigators are probing for a cause and possible suspects behind a fire that put an end to a portable toilet in north Nanaimo.
Firefighters arrived to find the plastic outhouse on fire when they responded to an alarm at Frank J. Ney Elementary School on Williamson Road shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The unit was at the site for workers doing renovation work at the school.
Capt. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue chief fire prevention officer, said an investigator was scheduled to go look at what he described as the molten remains of the portable facility Wednesday morning.
He said there are relatively few cases of burned outhouses that come to his office’s attention. The fire did not impact other structures or equipment, but the fire is being treated as suspicious.
“There’s nothing in there that’s going to spontaneously combust,” Mond said.
