Police save man from overdosing during drug search

NANAIMO – One suspect found overdosing when police search suspected drug house.

Police searched a suspected drug house in Harewood just in time to save a man's life.

The RCMP search warrant was carried out on a suspected drug house in Harewood on Wednesday resulting in the arrest of seven suspects and seizure of drugs and stolen property.

But when investigators completed their search they were alerted to a man in the backyard of the home in the 500 block of Albert Street who had apparently overdosed on an unknown substance and needed emergency medical treatment. Officers turned him on his side and monitored his breathing until paramedics arrived and taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He was treated and released 12 hours later.

Police also found a small quantity of methamphetamine, a large amount of drug paraphernalia and stolen property. They also arrest three women and four men, ranging from age 30 to 64.

The search was part of police efforts to identify the source and suppliers of drugs responsible for causing fatalities and near-fatal overdoses.

“If you know of someone who is selling drugs in our community, we need to hear from you," Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said in a press release. "Our officers are committed to ongoing continued enforcement action to identify the source of these deadly drugs and stop their distribution before others die."
