Tired of the same old soundbites every election? A Nanaimo podcaster feels voters’ pain, and has found a way to get Nanaimo candidates speaking one-on-one in real speak – with the mighty podcast.
The Nanaimo Chronicles free podcast is a round-up of Nanaimo’s mayoral, council, and school district candidates, where they get real about why they are running and the changes they hope to bring to the city.
Tod Maffin, a longtime CBC radio host, producer and podcaster, moved to Nanaimo four years ago and quickly saw the potential for politics and podcasting. This is the third election he has produced audio around the elections.
“I’ve always found it helpful to hear directly from candidates, in their own voices, to get a sense of who they are,” said Maffin.
The podcast gives voters a chance to hear what each candidate has to say, in a more intimate and direct manner than what a quick TV clip may provide. So far, thousands of Nanaimo voters have downloaded and listened to the collection.
“This provides an opportunity for anyone – from those who are sight-impaired, to those who prefer to listen to information – to learn more about the candidates,” he said.
With the election a day away, Saturday, Oct. 15, voters still have the chance to download the collection where most podcasts can be found. The content can also be heard on the podcast’s website at http://nanaimochronicles.com.
Maffin takes pride in the fact that his production doesn’t contain any ads, calling the podcast a “public service.”
