One person’s trash could be another person’s treasure this weekend as the City of Nanaimo is encouraging residents to put unwanted goods out by the curb in a swap meet-style event.

Reuse Rendezvous takes place Saturday and Sunday, July 22-23 throughout Nanaimo, noted a city press release, and people can take part by “placing unwanted toys, sporting goods, furniture, books, bikes and other items to the curb so that others can take and reuse them.”

Residents are asked to signify items for pickup with a ‘free’ sign and items should not obstruct sidewalks, roads or bike lanes. In addition, bargain hunters should respect private property, be careful when parking, observe speed limits and traffic signs, slow down and watch for children.

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said the event is intended to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.

“Reuse Rendezvous is a perfect opportunity for residents to de-clutter and give unwanted but usable household items a new lease of life,” he said in the press release. “I hope you will take the time to join in, have some fun, grab some great finds and spare the landfill.”

The city also asks that residents remove any items that weren’t picked up by Monday, July 24.
