One person is dead and another is in stable condition in hospital after a two-vehicle collision atop the Hump in Port Alberni.
Emergency crews responded to calls of an accident involving two vehicles on Hwy. 4 at 1:20 p.m. on Friday, RCMP Cpl. Denis Sauve said.
Few details are known at this time, but a BC Hydro truck and cube van collided and careened off of the road. The driver's side of the Hydro truck was heavily damaged. A portion of the cube van's cab was torn away. Firefighters assisted in removing the male driver of the van.
Both drivers were taken to West Coast General Hospital. The male driver of the van was pronounced dead. The female driver of the truck is in stable condition. Neither are Port Alberni residents, Sauve said.
A Nanaimo radio station is reporting that the driver of the cube van is from Nanaimo.
There were no other occupants in either vehicle, Sauve added.
A cause of the accident hasn't been determined yet. RCMP collision analysts are on the scene, Sauve said.
Traffic was held up for over an hour but is now open in alternating lanes, RCMP say.
