Vancouver Island University’s support workers are not planning job action this week and are hopeful that no further job action will be necessary to help them achieve a new collective agreement.
Last week, the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1858 shut down the facilities department at VIU for three days and the week before that, classes were cancelled for two days due to the union’s all-campus walkout.
But the union and the province achieved a tentative framework for compensation over the weekend that the union must now take back to the local tables at several post-secondary institutions that are part of this round of bargaining, said Ian McLean, B.C. colleges coordinator for CUPE.
“It falls right in line with other public sector improvements that we’ve seen,” he said, adding that further details would not be available until after a deal is ratified by the local tables.
