New online map pinpoints road construction in Nanaimo

NANAIMO – Commuters can pre-plan routes with a new online construction map through the city's website.

A new online map can help commuters skirt construction holdups.

The City of Nanaimo launched a construction app on its website this month to show people where large civic road projects are taking place.

It also displays information about projects, from their timing to what’s been done, the cost, and contact information if the public has more questions.

City staff members say the information is in demand and with this app, people can check it at their leisure and pre-plan routes. Previously construction information was distributed to homeowners or businesses directly in front of the roadwork.

“When it comes to road construction there’s always a demand for information and road construction can be highly controversial and having a location on the city’s website where all that information is available and very convenient is just a smart thing to do,” said Philip Cooper, the city’s communications manager.

The construction map is one of several online apps the city has launched to put more information at the public's fingertips. There's also a crime map and What's Building in my Neighbourhood, an app that offers up information about development applications.

The online construction app was done in-house and doesn't include private utility work or city maintenance, only larger projects affecting traffic.
