The City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools made an official announcement today about the coming Harewood artificial turf fields and more details about the shared funding plan.
The federal and provincial governments announced their infrastructure grant contribution last week, but the city announced Thursday, April 21, the total cost of the project, estimated at $5 million, which will include $1.19 million in city spending and $500,000 from the school district.
Charlene McKay, school district board chairperson, said in the press release that recent park improvements at Harewood Centennial Park have already benefited families.
“With the addition of two artificial turf fields, lights and spectator seating, our student athletes will now be able to play in a professional setting that is safe and complementary to our West Coast weather,” she said.
McKay also thanked the other project partners for “recognizing a need for a first-class sports field in the Harewood community.”
Mayor Leonard Krog added that the project will benefit citizens for years to come.
“Investment into the Harewood Centennial Park over the last few years had turned it into a destination for all members of our community,” he said in the release. “The addition of two artificial turf fields will further enhance this park while addressing the need for additional sports fields in Nanaimo.”
