The Departure Bay Activity Centre, damaged by fire earlier this year, will be torn down.
The City of Nanaimo announced Monday, July 18, that the community centre will be demolished and that consultation is planned to help determine the future of the site and programs held there.
The city recently received notice from its insurance company that the building was a “constructive loss and cannot be repaired” according to a press release.

Once the facility, closed since the fire, has been demolished, the city will review and consider what to do with the site, the replacement of lost recreational space and opportunities to work with user groups. The city’s parks, recreation and culture department will also lead public engagement to look at options for the site and consider facility replacement.
“We cannot get the old building back, but we can plan for the best way to replace what we care about most,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog in the press release.
