The Nanaimo SPCA is pairing cats and wine for a new fundraiser this August.

Whiskers and Wine, a three-hour cat-themed mixer, is the first fundraiser to be launched from the seat of the new multi-million dollar and state-of-the-art Nanaimo and District Community Animal Centre.

The facility, which opened in June, is much bigger than what the SPCA had before with features like a retail shop, a patio where people can sip coffee with their pets and a members-only dog park. It’s a complete change in how the Nanaimo SPCA has done things in the past, says Leon Davis, branch manager, who wants that reflected in the fundraisers it’s able to offer.

He describes this event as a “claw-ssier affair.”

It will feature wine from Millstone Estate Winery, beer from White Sails Brewing and appetizers from Dish. There will also be live music and an auction that includes hotel getaways and cat collectibles donated to the SPCA.

“We’ve had a lot of beer and burgers in the past and we’ve never ever had something a little more refined, a little bit fancier. We thought we’d try it and see how it goes,” said Davis, who adds that people will be able to see the facility, the cats available for adoption and sample local food, wine and beer. “We have a beautiful new building and we just want to show the kinds of things we can offer.”

Whiskers and Wine, hosted by CTV’s Bruce Williams, runs from 6-9 p.m. on Aug, 12 at the new facility at 154 Westwood Rd.

Tickets are $50 each and available at the SPCA. Money raised goes to the non-profit.
