Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 in Nanaimo will no longer have its finances handled by trustees.
An announcement about the branch’s transition was made at a Royal Canadian Legion B.C./Yukon Convention in Nanaimo last week.
The branch’s finances had been handled by a trusteeship since financial irregularities were discovered in October 2018. The branch, located at 129 Harewood Rd., closed its doors for about three weeks after the irregularities were discovered and reopened again that November.
“Thanks to hard-working executive and volunteers, and special thanks to Roy Cardinal and Gary Peters for tirelessly working on our behalf to make this happen,” John Bruce, RCL Branch 10 president, stated in a letter dated Wednesday, June 8.
Since opening its doors again, it has made great in-roads to becoming a “go to” legion branch,” he said.
Since the branch has the opportunity to show it can be viable again, Bruce said it’s up to the members to be involved through volunteering a few hours and general meeting attendance.
“We were almost held back from transitioning from trusteeship by not having a quorum at our May general meeting,” said Bruce, who also said members wishing to attend meetings will have to ensure dues are up-to-date.
The letter also lists some of the activities and events hosted regularly at the branch, including music trivia with a live band, dinner and dance events, jazz jams, featuring students and instructors from Vancouver Island University’s music program, pancake breakfasts and Fish and Chips Fridays.
The branch’s kitchen and bar are open at 3:30 p.m. Thursdays and 2:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
